Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the dining room at home in Oromocto New Brunswick (Canada). I was set up on the dining room table and used natural lighting from the patio/deck doors.

Time

The time of day for this particular shoot of the oriental lily was an early (partly overcast) afternoon on a Sunday.

Lighting

I love to use as much natural lighting as possible. I used the natural outside light as the primary source and adjusted the camera shooting angle accordingly to get the the best possible result (my mind's eye being happy).

Equipment

I used a tripod (for max steadiness), an older AF Nikkor 35 -105 mm f3.5/4.5 zoom lens and a Nikon D3100 DSLR. I used manual focus and manual metering for max exposure control. I used the RAW format and 10 second delay timer for max camera steadiness.

Inspiration

I read a great article about flowers done in the B&W Mode. I shot the oriental lily at home to practice and try to develop my own style/brand. I found that flowers and B&W are great together.

Editing

Normally I use Lightroom 3.6 to "clean up" (adjust contrast, sharpness, clarity along with occasional dodge/burn) the RAW images.

In my camera bag

Lately I have shooting a lot with a 35 mm f1.8 prime lens for both inside and outside shots. I have gotten use to the running shoe zoom mode for the best shooting angles.I have a small bag for spare parts and a SB 800 Speed Lite. I like to travel light whenever possible. I have two zoom lens (18 to 55 mm and 55 to 200 mm - variable aperture design)

Feedback

Be patient and flexible while shooting. Try out ideas and mostly have FUN during the shoot.
