Location
This was shot in my studio in Santa FE. I tried various shots of her jumping but this was the best one. There is some photoshopping involved to get the background white while keeping the dark tonality of the jumper.Time
There is no time of day in the studio. This is shot entirely with artificial lighting.Lighting
There are two studio flash lights with no reflectors on the background. One on each side, with flags to prevent light hitting the lens and causing flare. The jumper is lit by a 6 feet by 8 feet reflector board which I moved back until I got the ratio I wanted.Equipment
Shot on a Nikon D3 with 50mm f:1.4 Two Bowens 500WS lights fired by the Bowens wireless triggering system.Inspiration
I saw this girl practicing these moves and wanted to capture it. I was photographing her mom, who is a dancer too and we spoke about it and eventually set it up.Editing
I carefully selected the background and used curves to get my background pure white.... I created a layer mask in the curves layer to stop the effect of the affecting the subjectIn my camera bag
Photoshop to get the background pure white. I used careful selecting and created a layer mask to keep the adjustments from affecting the subject. I wanted the almost black silhouette while retaining a little tonality and a white background.Feedback
You need flash to freeze the moment without motion blur. Don't stop until you have several good shots with angles you like. Let the dancer rest up and then do more!
