Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a bridal event at a local shopping mall. I was exhibiting at a gallery in the mall strip and the stall next to the gallery was a bridal saloon, and they were featuring dressed up brides all with different gowns and dresses.

Time

It was the time of the day around 5:00 pm when everything at the mall started to pick up after people have gone out of their offices and jobs. I was watching my artwork exhibit at the art gallery when I saw this beautiful bride run across the parking lot in her very light pink strapless bridal gown. They had just finished a bridal photoshoot somewhere together with four other dressed up brides and she was playfully running back to the bridal saloon. Thankfully, I had my Canon D60 with me at that time. In a few minutes, after loosing her inside the bridal saloon, she emerged on the display window as a live bridal mannequin for the shop. As the sun was setting, I took this shot right by the window inside the shop. And she acted like I wasn't there at all.

Lighting

I think the subtle overhead spot lighting from the display window plus the natural sunset light really created a beautiful live bridal mannequin. Natural lighting to me is still the best light any photographer can use. I do not use flash on my photos at all.

Equipment

I used a handheld Canon D60 with a regular 35mm lens. No flash, no tripod.

Inspiration

The beautiful lighting accented the beautiful bride mannequin - artificial lighting plus natural light from the setting sun.

Editing

No further processing was made for this shot.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon D60 camera with 55-200 mm lens. I usually carry the standard lenses and at least one macro lens. Also a staple to my bag is a Canon 55mm lens.

Feedback

I love spontaneity and to me, those are the best shots I get. For this shot, the subject was just being still and enjoying her moment as a live mannequin on a big glass display window. I gave her the liberty to pose naturally and the way she would like. Be yourself, is usually what I tell my subjects. And when I tell them that, that's when the natural comes out - as natural and candid as can be.
