The orchards near Fruita, Utah were once used by the Mormon settlers as a way to ensure sustenance. The nearly 3,100 trees are now owned and maintained by the Capitol Reef National Park Service. It’s certainly an unexpected, but welcoming, dichotomy from being in the middle of a rocky desert to walking into this sweet-smelling, lush oasis of trees. Depending on the time of year, you may find peaches, apricots, cherries, plums, pears, mulberries, walnuts or almonds. You're free to pick and eat (while in the orchard, or pay a small fee to take some home) any ripe fruit during the harvest season.
