Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Singapore at McRitchie Reservoir. This was near the water. It's not to far from the entrance at Lornie road.

Time

This was late afternoon, around golden hour. I set out specifically to capture these beautiful macaques in the golden hour light.

Lighting

This was taken in natural light. It's the golden hour light that made these pictures. The fur has a colour that compliments the light. I generally shot using the sun for backlighting.

Equipment

Sony a7s, 70-200G f4, hand held.

Inspiration

I wanted to see if I could take pictures of the macaques and make the shots look nice. I had been here once before at an earlier time and only had a wider lens. I really like portraits, so I was really keen to make these shots feel more like portraits of the macaques, not just another tourist shot. If you look at some of the other pics from the day, I think they capture that intention.

Editing

I did do post processing. Due to shooting natural light, I was to balance the shadows and highlights a little better. I generally start in lightroom, and then go to photoshop. I think for these I used some veveza2 from nikcollection to adjust some of the colour. But it could all be done in lightroom too. Because the light was so nice, I really didn't have to do that much. And because they have fur, I didn't have to do any retouching work for the skin :) Much easier than portraits of people.

In my camera bag

I try to pack for the occasion. It really changes depending on what I'm shooting and where. Mostly these are in my bag on a regular basis (not all at once though): Sony a7s, 24-70 zeiss f4, zeiss 55 1.8, 70-200G f4, cactus rf60 flashes and v6 transceiver. rotolight neo, fstoppers flash discs, good soft boxes with s-type mount.variable nd filters. And I always have my cleaning kit!

Feedback

Think about what you want to shoot. My goal was to capture the macaques in more of a portrait style, so I went there with that attitude and tried to capture them in my portrait style. Finally, just get out and do it :) Don't sit on the couch day dreaming about it. And enjoy the experience. It was a beautiful afternoon in a stunning location with great models. I finished feeling happy, proud and motivated. These experiences don't happen everyday, so really try to enjoy it while your shooting.
