Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Downtown Colorado Springs.

Time

It was early afternoon.

Lighting

It was harsh afternoon natural light. I had to close up my aperture as small as I could get it and I still got such rich light and color.

Equipment

Just my Nikon D3000.

Inspiration

The subjects are my brother and nephew. My family had all gotten together for lunch the week before I moved across the country. We were walking back to the car and I realized that my nephew had dressed just like my brother and was trying to match his stride. I had to scramble to get my lens cap off in time, but I managed to get this shot of the two of them sharing a moment as simple as walking to the car together before I moved away. Totally worth getting my lens cap scratched because I dropped it in the process.

Editing

I had to adjust the white balance a little because the strong sunlight on white shirts.

In my camera bag

I'm not very far along in my camera bag accumulation, so I only have my Nikon D3000, a UV filter, the original kit lens (which is cracked, but it creates really cool lens flares), a 50mm lens, and my 16-85mm zoom. I occasionally carry a flash, ring flash, or diffuser but I usually prefer natural light.

Feedback

Make your camera an extension of your arm. I got this shot after a family lunch, which is usually not considered an exciting photographic event! I love using my family as practice for candid shots. Just always be prepared to rip your camera out and (attempt to ) get a shot.
