Behind The Lens

Location

A couple minutes walk from my house in Wiveliscombe, sometimes the most amazing things can be under your nose.

Time

Sunrise, around 6am one March morning.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the sun rising and the mist across the fields but the foreground needed stand out so I decided to manually fire a flash during the exposure. Simple but effective and no need for triggers.

Equipment

Cheap Yongnuo manual flash. Sony a580. Minolta 35-105mm. Slik tripod.

Inspiration

Woke up early and could see the sky was looking interesting so took a chance on walking to location. I'd been before and seen the mist but the sky was dull that day. Persistence and making to effort to get out won't always get results but then you won't get anywhere if you don't adopt those two simple things.

Editing

Minimal post work, less is usually more.

In my camera bag

I use to carry a ridiculous amount of kit around but now stick to more minimalistic selection. Sony a7r, Sony fe70-200 f4, Sigma 17-35 cheap Chinese travel tripod. Nisi filter kit with polarizing filter plus some ND grads. I still use the Slik tripod as it's far more stable but the cheaper one is great for the price and 1kg less in weight. I have other lenses which I use depending on situation. Sigma 50mm art which is amazing for detail but weighs far too much. Some other older Minolta lenses. Plan on replacing some lenses with native fe mount ones soon ad funds allow. Luckily landscape photography doesn't depend on autofocus too much.

Feedback

Best advice to anyone is to get out, be it early morning or late in the day. Drive, walk, what ever is required to get some where. I find looking online for inspiration then use google earth to narrow down locations. Go out first with no expectation's, take some time to look around without your camera out. In your mind imagine the scene at dawn or dusk, where will the sun be, how will the light affect that tree, will a breeze bring interesting movement or just distraction. Once you have the image in your head you can plan to go back at the correct time to try and achieve your goal. Don't expect it to come together every time, it's never that easy but then where would the fun be in that...
