I took this in my back garden in New Zealand, while out playing with my kids and in-laws. I wish i knew the name of the flower as it is one of my favorites. It flowers all year around, i have many pics of it! The butterfly is a NZ monarch.Time
A mid summer day in January just before mid day on a beautiful bright sunny day!Lighting
I love light and dont shy away from the high sun. I got very low and shot toward the sky, it also helped to get the glow through the wings. I do of course have Many pics very similar but this is the one that gave me that "joy" while enhancing it.Equipment
I have two cameras but this was shot with my 1100D. with my favorite lens the 50mm 1.4 usm. It gives super sharp images and i seem to get a great hit rate from it. It is lightweight, fast and great for most situations. No tripod with kids running around... My settings were 1/1000 F4 ISO 125Inspiration
Monarch butterflies are fascinating, beautiful, friendly and only live for 24hrs! They deserve to have their picture taken!Editing
Lightroom. Shadows and blacks are +50 but my highlights are down all the way. My contrast is up 100%. Contradicting i know but it seems to work for this pic. I haven't messed with the colours they are just loving the settings and the light. In my camera bag
I have a Canon 1100d is my old fav. esp as i normally take a lot of pics of kids, it is light and i dont feel as overly protective when playing about. Of course i have the kit lenses but they are very redundant since investing in my 50mm 1.4usm as few years ago. I recently bought a Canon 80d tho i am still very much learning how to work with indoor light, particularly off camera flash and high ISOs. Not my fav. types to work with but i like to try new things and find it frustrating that taking pics inside is not as fun or easy as outside! I also now have a 17-70 2.8-4 again for inside mostly i need some wider angles when kids are close around a room.Feedback
Patience. look for those magical light moments and think how can i get that on camera!
