Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Island of Koh Phangan in Thailand. I stepped out of my beach-side bungalow on a private beach to find this beautifully adorned boat floating peacefully in the shallows.

Time

This photo was taken after a nap in the sand in late afternoon, around 4:00. In Thailand the sun sets around 7:00pm year round, so the sun was not high in the sky.

Lighting

I used the low sun to the left of me to naturally light my scene. The direct, low sun also gave me the ability to use a fast shutter speed and maintain that great range of blue in the sky.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D80 and a Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

Inspiration

I was captured by the way the colored fabric on the boat popped against the ocean and sky. There was just something so delicious about how vibrant the boat was, just floating dreamily on the waters surface.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW so post-processing is obligatory. I used Photoshop to increase vibrancy, adjusted the histogram to increase contrast and used Selective color to help bring the photo to life.

In my camera bag

I like to keep it as simple as possible when I'm traveling. I like to stick with a standard lens such as the 18-55mm and then also bring along my 50mm f/1.8 prime lens for some portraits or detail shots.

Feedback

I suggest playing with angles to change perspectives. Try standing or squatting at different heights to get unique perspectives; and always look for color, especially when it is contrasted against a natural background! Combing nature and the bright colors of man-made objects can give you some really stunning results!
