Location
Last winter I made this picture in Havelte, a small village in Drenthe, Netherlands. Waxwings are wintering in the Netherlands, and you do not see them often. I am therefore very happy with my photo series "Waxwings".Time
In January 2016 one Bohemian Waxwing was seen in Havelte. I went several times to Havelte, but never saw him. However, late in the afternoon, january 25 I went to look again, he was there, beautiful on the branch between the red berries, in the golden light.Lighting
I was lucky, the light was perfect. It was a cold, sunny day, around 16:00, the golden hour. The background were beautiful shrubs. The Bohemian Waxwing was very curious and sat long in the tree.Equipment
This was a shot off a Canon 7D, lens Tamron 150-600. No flash. I have used a monopod.Inspiration
I like being in nature and especially birds attract my attention. I want to photograph them in their natural environment. Much patience is needed to photograph a bird. If I succeed to photograph a bird, with the perfect compose using, and with the perfect light, it gives me a "wow" feeling. This photo is very special to me, because the Waxwing is only a very short time in the Netherlands.Editing
I always shoot in RAW, and edit the pictures after. However, not too much, just sharpening and white balance. My preference is for as little editing as possible. In my camera bag
If I'm shooting in nature, I always have with me my Canon 7D and Tamron 150-600mm lens. Furthermore, in my camera bag, a Sigma 70-300mm lens and a Canon 50mm lens, a tripod and a monopod, rain protection for the camera and lens, a plastic bag to sit on and warm gloves and a hat. Sometimes I take my camouflage tent. I always have a beanbag in the car. I use this when I shoot from the car.Feedback
For bird photography and wildlife photography, you need a suitcase full of patience. You have the habits of the birds and know the game. Also recognizing songs and tracks is very important. Keep in mind that the weather can change, so bring rain and warm clothes with you. If you used the car as a rolling shelter, use a beanbag. I apologize for my bad english, I'm not used to write an interview in English.
