At the south entrance of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, stands the imposing Fajada Butte. This 380 foot structure acted as an enormous welcome sign for this popular trade route of the ancestral puebloan people between AD 900 and 1150. There are several dwellings perched along the high cliff bands which may have been used for ceremonial or surveillance purpose. Also located near the top of the butte is a petroglyph known as the “Sun Dagger”. A spiral etching which, before the rocks shifted in the 1980s, acted as a type of sun dial to indicate summer and winter solstice. Unfortunately for new visitors to the canyon, access has been closed off indefinitely due to erosion and rockfalls.
