I once found myself in the small village of Bercy, Haiti. As i sat in on a church sermon in a tarp roofed shanty, i really began to take in my surroundings. I had arrived in the country no less then 48 hours prior. My brain was experiencing culture shock like its never known before. The sermon came to an end and a boy with a collared, striped shirt approached me and tugged on my arm, he then made two fists and held them up in front of his face like he was preparing for a fight. I was confused until it dawned on me that this boy wanted his photo taken, i had my camera hung on my neck and he had pointed at it several times. This was the only photo i managed to snap before the boy's excitement overtook him and he ran to me to see what the photo looked like. Later, i made the realization that this boy may have never seen a photograph of himself and this must have been an extremely exciting event in his day. I am beyond thankful for that day and i cant express how much that trip to Haiti taught me. This photo placed top 12 in the State of Washington and has received numerous other awards. One day i hope to share my success with this human that opened so many doors through a photograph.
