Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Chobe Game reserve in Botswana. I am an amateur photographer and see every photo that I shoot as an opportunity to practice my skills.

Time

The photo was taken on 21 July 2013 at 07.36am. We were camping and enjoyed a cup of coffee in the the early morning sun. Bushveld mornings in Southern Africa is quite cold and all creatures come out to bask in the sun and to look for early morning snacks left by careless campers. I took the photo, resting the lens against a tree trunk, because I did not have a tripod close by.

Lighting

The early morning light was quite bright but soft. I waited for the hornbill to turn his head towards the early morning sun to catch the glint in its eye. I thought that its fluffed up head feathers would assist with the "bushveld winter mood" that I wanted to capture.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 50D with a Canon EF 100 - 400mm zoom lens, no tripod and/or flash were used.

Inspiration

I like taking photographs of birds and use any opportunity that presents itself to do so. This bird sat in the camel-thorn tree at our campsite, enjoying the early morning sun, as if he was listening to our early morning chats. Great shooting opportunity that I could not miss!

Editing

None

In my camera bag

I pack my Canon EOS 50D with a Canon EF 24 - 105mm zoom lens. I often use a polarizing filter when I shoot in the harsh African sunlight. I also pack my Canon EF 100 - 400mm zoom lens for shooting photos of animals and birds. Lastly, I throw in my lightweight tripod and use it when needed.

Feedback

Be patient and take lots of photos. Birds, like us, also enjoy early morning sun to warm up their cold bodies.
