Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Ft. Pierre South Dakota on a nice winter morning right by the Scotty Phillips Cemetery. I love this location, while hardly out of town is a nice peaceful place to go and just sit and enjoy a sunrise and check out the old ford work truck and the cemetery.

Time

This is probably one of my more favorite photos. I woke up probably about 5:30 am made some coffee and set out on the sunrise hunt. I was lucky enough i did not have to travel far, maybe 2 miles from my home across the river in Pierre SD. I got on location and did some playing with composition to get a feel for what i though looked best, got set up and waited. This shot was taken roughly around 7:30-8 am.

Lighting

I was a bit worried with this one as i got set up, the clouds were heavy and continually building so i thought for sure id gotten up early, gone out and gotten set up only to be let down. I was about to throw in the towel when i saw a wonderful yellowish orange color start to appear, i knew then i was in for a spectacular sunrise and indeed it was. I had to wait and do some test shots to make sure i liked my composition and everything before the light was pefect. I did not have to use any flash or special lighting, this is all naturally lit.

Equipment

At the time of this shoot i was usimg the Sony a57 with the Tamron 18-200mm at 18mm F8 ISO400 1/200 sec Cheap sunpak tripod. I have since unpgraded to a much sturdier manfrotto tripod. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I had initially set out to shoot the sunrise with an abandoned schoolhouse. While en route to the schoolhouse out of the corner of my eye i spotted this old truck just sitting there begging to be captured with the sunrise. I love old abandoned homes, buildings, vehicles etc.

Editing

For this photo i used lightroom. I first did lens corrections, abberation removal. I then went on to adjust my exposure, highlights, shadows and a little contrast. I used the graduated nd filter in LR to bring down the brightness of the sky a bit and bring out the colors. Did a little white balance adjustment

In my camera bag

I currently carry my cameras Sony a7r and Sony a57 Lenses, tamron 18-200mm, Rokinon 16mm f2.0 and the Samyang 10mm f2.8 I also keep my Formatt Hitech grand ND filters with me as well as the Formatt hitech Firecast 16 stop ND for those daytime long exposures. I carry a flash mainly for my nighttime astro shoots along with a 5 in 1 reflector/diffuser to manage my lighting. Last but not least is the Manfrott 055xpro 3 tripod with ball head, all kept in my manfrotto bag.

Feedback

If you trying to capture the amazing beauty of a sunrise or sunset my best advise is to get out the plenty early so you can scout your location, walk around and get your best composition. There is nothing more upsetting than rushing to a location and not getting the quality of photos you were looking for. So my advise to those just starting out would be to leave early stay late.
