Behind The Lens

Location

At home, in our front room. The camera was right there as we had been watching the birds at our feeders.

Time

It was mid-day on a cloudy/rainy day.

Lighting

It was actually very simple side lighting that came in through west facing windows. We were actually pretty close to them, as our house tends to be quite dark on gloomy days.

Equipment

I use a Canon 70D. (And I am 100% sure it was a hand-held shot because the dog freaks out when the tripod is too near.)

Inspiration

I've titled this shot "His Voice" because as many Lab owners know too well, they are very expressive with their eyes. We had just recently lost our other Lab, and you could still see the sadness is Cash's eyes. He needed me as much as I needed him for reassurance.

Editing

I converted the image to B/W and usually run a simple sharpen action.

In my camera bag

My everyday, on-the-go equipment is my Canon 70D with a 18-135mm lens and my iPhone. I'm a member of a 365 group and we follow daily prompts so I'm always looking to be ready to capture when my moment is right. I have a few other lenses in my bag as well, but that is definitely my go to all-around lens.

Feedback

Photographing a black dog is hard...really hard. Practice! Try different times of day, get down to his level, and take 1,000 shots if you have to. I'm still learning, I don't have any fancy equipment, I have a skiddish dog, but once in a while I get lucky :)
