Location
This was taken night ice climbing in the Italian Dolomites. It was my first time trying the sport and I was pretty nervous. We spent quite a lot of time watching some of the locals make the climb, obviously they made it look easy. It was a desperately cold evening which was great for the ice, but not for me. When it was my turn I felt the weight of the axes in my hands and approached the wall...Time
Dark winters evening, around 10pm.Lighting
The bright spot lights were only catching the front of the ice column, isolating it from it's surroundings. They were so harsh that everything else was in darkness.Equipment
Smart phone! Usually I use a nikon D3500 but this time only my trusty phone was to hand, proving that it's not always about the camera.Inspiration
The climbers red jacket against the ice and the night stood out. I couldn't resist taking a photo.Editing
Some simple work in light room to crop the image and bring out the detail in the ice.In my camera bag
Normally I carry my nikon D3500, tripod, ND lense and more recently a 360 veho ricon camera too!Feedback
I love my nikon but photos like this prove that sometimes a quick snap on what you have to hand can be just as good. If the subject, lighting and moment is right then that's a great start. Sports/mountain pursuit photography is dependant on timing so i usually take a few of each image, just to make sure i have the right shot.
