Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the coast just outside the cove of Boggle Hole, North Yorkshire.

Time

I took this photo around 11pm on a night with a full moon.

Lighting

The majority of the lighting in this image was provided by the full moon, but I used a torch to add a little more light to the area in the foreground.

Equipment

I used my Nikon d700 with a Nikor 18-35ml lens. I also had a remote release with timer. And an essential piece was a strong, sturdy tripod with good weight behind it to ensure there was no camera shake.

Inspiration

I had been getting more and more inspired by night time photography over the months before this photo. I had been to the location before and I was struck by the lack of light pollution, the sweep of the bay and had to come and try this shot.

Editing

I did some minor touch ups to the light and colour to ensure the photo had the sense of impact yet peace that I felt as I captured this image. And because of the higher iso some noise reduction was needed.

In my camera bag

I like to travel lite when I photograph. I will usually have my wide angle lens and my telephoto lens incase I want to pick out some details of the scene. For night shoots I have my remote release and a powerful torch to add any extra light I might need. And I always carry a good solid tripod for my landscape work.

Feedback

The key to this shot was patients and repetition. Painting the light in with the torch will look different every time so just keep going until you get it how you want. Taking the camera off long exposure noise reduction will hugely reduce the time for each shot and the strain on your batteries, you can always reduce the noise in post production. A mid to high iso with a shutter speed below 30 seconds will help reduce any movement of the moon. Including the foreground really leads the viewer into the image and is always a good way to engage your audience.
