Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while walking along Mulambin Beach in Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia.

Time

This photo was taken at dusk, just as the sky begins to fill with colour.

Lighting

I love shooting in the late afternoon, as day turns into night. I'm a big fan of sunsets. This photo was taken just as golden hour turned into blue hour.

Equipment

This was shot using a Canon EOS 60D with a 50mm lens. My settings were: aperture f/5.6, ISO 500, shutter speed 1/400. Because the 60D is a cropped sensor camera, the focal length was realistically more like 55mm.

Inspiration

I take photos intuitively and draw inspiration from the world around me. I saw a stunning sunset and knew I wanted to capture it.

Editing

My post-processing method is very minimal. I increased the contrast and saturation while decreasing the highlights to really make those dusky sunset colours pop.

In my camera bag

Number one, I always have my phone. The quality is surprisingly good and you just need to use what you have. But mostly I will always carry my Canon 6D Mark II with a Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 lens.

Feedback

My advice to other photographers would be just to shoot what you love. I love sunsets, so I went looking for them and thereby was able to photograph them. Chase your passion and embrace your creativity.
