Behind The Lens

Location

Just off shore in Adelaide, South Australia. It was a scorching day, I took my boat out to escape the heat. It was calm, flat sea and about 10 degrees cooler of shore.

Time

The pic was right on sunset as you can see. I had been on the water for an hour or so and was heading in before it got dark.

Lighting

Sunset. The best time of day as far as I am concerned. No two sunsets are ever the same.

Equipment

I keep my old camera on my boat, it is a Canon IXUS 95 IS. It had served me well as a travel camera before I upgraded.

Inspiration

Right place, right time, right conditions. I spotted the subject and recognised it as one of our local icons, The One and All. It was a beautiful sight, I positioned myself the best I could to get the shot.

Editing

No post processing, straight from the camera.

In my camera bag

They say the best camera is the one you have with you. These days my Samsung S7 mobile gets a lot of work, it takes a great pic and is always on hand. On this occasion it was the old Canon which lives on my boat. My travel camera is a Sony A6000, my first really good camera and I love it. I have the kit lens, a Sigma 30mm prime and a Sony 50mm prime lens. I love the Sigma, cheap and sharp. I also carry spare batteries, a polarizing filter and a cheap remote.

Feedback

The ocean on sunset is magnificent. You don't need a boat to capture a great sunset, just be at the right place at the right time. The right time isn't all the time, but that few times it is, it is worth it. Perseverence pays off.
