Behind The Lens

Location

This is the famous Tunnel View in Yosemite National Park. The beauty of this spot is it changes constantly and you need to be patient to get that perfect shot.

Time

This was taken mid morning in January. I remember waking up early to a storm coming through the valley. Clouds were thick so just decided to drive around. The canyon was closed in so I just did close up shots of trees with fog and fresh snow. All of a sudden the valley started to open up so I knew exactly where I wanted to go.

Lighting

I stood here for hours just waiting for the perfect light. Most of the time you could not even see El Capitan on the left as the light was flat from all the cloud cover. As the tunnel started to open up the fog started to come up from the valley floor.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D810 and the Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 on a Benro tripod.

Inspiration

This is one of those iconic shots that I believe every nature photographer has to take in their lifetime. As a child when I saw Ansel Adams photographs of Tunnel View I knew one day I had to photograph it myself.

Editing

I converted the photo to b/w and used mostly basic adjustments. I did sharpen and add clarity to the cliff walls and trees.

In my camera bag

My bag currently has 2 cameras, the Nikon D5 and Nikon D500. I still have my Nikon D810 that this photo was taken with as a backup. Lenses I carry with me all the time are the Nikkor 14-24 f2.8, Nikkor 24-70 f2.8, Nikkor 70-200 f4 and the Sigma 150-600 Sport. I also carry 3,6 and 9 ND filters as well as a polarizing filter.

Feedback

Patience patience and more patience. As most photographers know it is rare to just walk up to something and get the great shots. While I was here at Tunnel View I saw many photographers come and go. I and a handful of others waited... All that time the scene was beautiful at times but there was no fog on the trees below... Then just like magic the fog built up starting on the right near Bridal Veil Falls and moving to the left. This all happened in the matter of minutes and the fog was gone. I got the shot I wanted and left happy.
