Arched back of a gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) in Monterey Bay, California, under a mackerel sky (cirrocumulus undulatus stratiformis cloud formations). The smooth patch of water is called a "whale footprint" or a "flukeprint," which is created by the motion of a whale's tail as it displaces water just beneath the surface. Some whalers believed the flukeprint was caused by oil left behind by the whale. Inuit peoples called it "a window into the whale's world." Fine-mist spray from another gray whale is also visible.
