Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture while hiking Big Cedar and Kennedy Falls trail in North Vancouver, Canada.

Time

This was taken relatively early in the morning. It was a pretty hazy day in the morning and the sun was just breaking through the clouds.

Lighting

Lighting is a finicky thing, and especially when dealing with light outdoors. You never know what the weather is going to do and if a cloud is coming over top of you to create a giant shadow. I would say taking advantage of lighting while you can is what you have to do, and if you see a moment, capture it, rather than waiting for it to happen again.

Equipment

For this photo I used a Sony A7 with a 16-35mm F4.0 lens.

Inspiration

The inspiration I get from taking photos is to capture the moment we are in. It's my way to reminisce about a memory I had with my friends, family or just an experience that you want to freeze in time.

Editing

For post-processing I usually bring all my photos into Lightroom. For this photo it is obviously black and white, so I removed all the colour. As for other edits I would do is purely adjusting contrast, exposure levels, highlights, shadows, just all the typical options Lightroom gives you.

In my camera bag

I typically carry two cameras. I have my Sony A7, with a 55mm F1.8 lens, and a 16-35 F4.0 lens, and my Sony RX100 MIV. As for a tripod I always have my gorilla pod handy while I'm hiking. It's a small enough tripod that can adapt to most situations.

Feedback

If you're trying to take a similar picture I would go fairly early in the morning. I would check the forecast to see if there is any sunny breaks during the day. You would want to go at a time where the sun finally breaks through the clouds. Early morning daybreak can works as well as dew from the ground is evaporating into the air.
