Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at New Farm, Qld, overlooking Brisbane River.

Time

For memory, i think it was roughly somewhere around 7.30 pm on a Saturday night. I had been out chasing storms every opportunity i had that storm season and previous season without much luck but i figured if i persisted things would eventually go my way. Only minutes before capturing this i had found myself under a little lean to shelter on what looked to be a site office on a construction site, that you could say, i shouldn't have been in, although it was closest dry spot available from the terrential rain and lightning that had just passed. Anyway, once rain had stopped i jumped fence to get a better angle and position next to river as lightning strikes were consistantly visible in near distance.

Lighting

I had quickly set up camera on tripod on bank of river and set to a thirty second exposure and focused in on distant lights across river. My immediate surroundings were pretty dark and kind of hoped for best as far as camera angle and so on goes. I had camera on two second timer and once shutter had opened i stood, looking at sky and just hoped for best. Roughly 10-15 seconds into the 30 sec exposure, a massive double strike turned night into day for a brief moment and i was pretty sure i had captured something special.

Equipment

Camera is Canon 700d, lens-EFS 10-18mm, 30second exposure

Inspiration

I just wanted to capture a lightning strike and had been trying for couple storm seasons to achieve this without much luck and plenty near misses. I was beside myself the moment i looked at the live view and saw what i got.

Editing

I used lightroom and didn't do alot other then try to bring out finer detail in lightning strike itself!

In my camera bag

I am pretty new to Photography and still have much to learn but my bag consists of pretty simple setup, Canon EOS 700d with two kit lenses, efs10-18mm lens and a Tamron XR Di II 18-200mm lens, and of course a sturdy Tripod.

Feedback

Persistance will pay off, keep trying at every available opportunity and sooner or later it will pay off!
