Ft. Pickens was built in 1834 to defend the Pensacola Bay (Florida) coastline from foreign invasion. This fort was used for over 100 years until missiles, airplanes and bombs made harbor forts obsolete. Most of the fort consisted of gun emplacements, such as this, both on top and within the walls.
In this area, the casemates have had a lot of drainage through the walls and mineral buildup has created mini stalactite and stalagmites!
