I took this photo in my local park in Central Jersey, USA. My 'go to' place for trees when the snow is falling.Time
I was preparing dinner and it had been snowing a while already. Suddenly I noticed the beautiful late day light. The sun had set but the sky was still light enough so I turned off the stove, jumped in my truck and carefully drove over to the local park. The snow on the ground helped to reflect what little light was left. I stopped and shot this from the truck window as it was snowing heavily and I just wanted to get a few images before it became too dark.Lighting
I used my flash so the light reflected off the falling snowflakes. It was a very wet snowfall and with a slow shutter speed, I was able to capture this shimmer effect.Equipment
This was taken with my old Sony Cybershot digital camera back in 2010 I think. No interchangeable lens on this camera! It had many auto setting options but I honestly can't remember which one I used on this! It was a trial and error type of thing. Just kept trying different settings until the light and speed seemed right.Inspiration
I've always loved magical Winter scenes and whenever it snows, I always keep my camera at the ready! I love the challenge of getting snow falling and the different effects it will create depending on the lighting and possible flash use as it's getting dark. The dark/light contrasts usually produce striking images.Editing
There is minimal post processing on this photo. I like to keep photos as pure as possible. In my camera bag
Nowadays I use a Canon 7DMk2. I have the Canon 100-400 Image Stabilizer Ultrasonic lens for shooting birds. With that I use a Gitzo GT3542LS tripod. I'm very satisfied with this tripod, made in Italy. I also have the Canon EFS 18-135mm Macro lens and the Canon EFS 55-250. In addition I have a Tokina Wide Angle AT-X Pro SD 12-24 F4(1F) DXII which is great for sightseeing, capturing large buildings in tight spots.Feedback
I am a self taught photographer. I let what I see determine the shot. Sometimes it has to happen quick, as it did in this case, where I had to snap from the vehicle I was in! Other times, I find taking my time and getting to know the subject better will reveal the best angle or an angle not considered at first glance. The lighting might call for laying down and shooting up into a tree. Or taking a few steps to the left to get the angle of light and shapes to line up in a more pleasing fashion. Mostly, I've learned, to expect the unexpected. More often than not, I head out with a plan in mind, and something else entirely ends up being the subject! So flexibility and an open mind are key and part of the fun of photography for me.
