Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Holland State Park in Michigan. This is a walkway that goes out to a pier on Lake Michigan. During the winter the walkway becomes a superhighway of ice from waves slamming on the rocks then overtaking the walkway. It's a beautiful sight.

Time

This shot was taken at sunset when the light was fading but there was still a moment between light and dark when a calm comes over the horizon and everyone stands quietly taking it in.

Lighting

Sunset on Lake michigan. Is one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen. The warmth of the colors reflecting off of the cold of the ice during winter is truly inspiring

Equipment

This was a handheld shot using my Canon 70d with an 10-18mm canon lens.

Inspiration

My inspiration in nature and of course Lake Michigan. There is inspiration everywhere you look in the Lake and it's ever changing. If I set up in the same place every day for the rest of my life I will never have a shot duplicated because of the change of the lake and nature. It's an amazing feeling to understand how lucky we are to be able to appreciate what we have being so close to this amazing lake.

Editing

There was minimal post processing done on this shot.........a tweak of exposure was all it needed. I love keeping shots as authentic as I can while still being able to share what I witnessed and what inspired me.

In my camera bag

The equipment I carry in my bag whenever I go out is: Canon 70d camera Canon t3i camera Canon 10-18mm lens Canon 18-35mm lens Canon 75-300mm lens Sigma 150-500mm lens (for wildlife or surfers) I also have a remote shutter release, a timed shutter release for long exposures, Various lens filters, Lens cleaner and cloth, extra lens caps, lightweight tripod, rain sleeve for my camera and lens just in case and a snack and bottle of water so I don't have to leave for any reason once I've found what I want to shoot.

Feedback

Patience is the key to taking shots that make us feel something. It isn't always getting lucky within a few minutes of being out, it's waitingoing out the weather, crowds to leave or lighting to change. You can try to plan but it rarely ends up happening as you planned. Patience is key and being able to adjust and find anot her shot if things don't go as you planned. Photography is an art and not just in taking great shots, it's also an art to be able to adjust quickly and see a beautiful shot where others may not see it. Photographers are artist and I am excited to continue to learn and improve with every year.
