Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken from my living room window and Cyril the Squirrel was sat on the garden fence about 10 to 12 feet away from the window

Time

The shot was taken early morning, when Cyril had popped along to the bird feeder on the fence behind him for his breakfast

Lighting

This was taken with natural daylight lighting only

Equipment

It was taken with a Canon 5D Mk iii fitted with a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L Mk II lens. It was taken in Av (aperture) mode set at f2.8 with a focal length of 200mm at ISO500 and a shutter speed of 1/160 sec

Inspiration

Cyril has now gone through about 3 bird-feeders, as he gnaws away at the wires to get to the nuts. Although considered by many to be vermin and pests, they are very photogenic and fun to watch and as long as he is happy to pose for photos, I am happy to supply his food..!

Editing

The original shot was done in RAW in colour. Using Lightroom 5, I have cropped the photo square to fill the frame and used the 'Rule of Thirds' to get his face on one of the sets of intersecting lines. I then converted it to monochrome and tweaked the sharpness a bit too.

In my camera bag

Depends what I am going to shoot. If landscape shots, I will take my Canon 16-35 f/4 L Mk ii lens or Canon 24-105 f/4 L lens and a landscape head with my tripod. For wildlife shots or aviation shots, I will use my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L Mk ii lens handheld and possibly with a 1.4 or 2x Extender if needed.

Feedback

Patience, patience and more patience...! Set you shooting mode to continuous and your metering to spot metering. Focus on the nearest eye to keep it sharp. If depth of field is too shallow (not enough of the body is sharp, select a smaller aperture (larger f number))
