Behind The Lens

Location

Walking along at Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo, i noticed a group of people looking down at the foot path. There was this guy just sitting enjoying the sun. I just got down on the ground waiting for him to move or turn, as he was facing away. When he looked back to see who was creeping up on him....I snapped it.

Time

This was taken in the middle of the day just after lunch, with the summer sun right above us.

Lighting

This was just a spontaneous picture, as I was busy playing tour guide to some friends at the zoo. Oddly enough, my best animal photo came from a wild iguana running around the zoo while all his mates were captive.

Equipment

Had my Canon 5d Mark II, and my brand new 50mm. Just used my belly for support on the ground :)

Inspiration

I love getting close as possible to my subject without them knowing. I was creeping up on this little guy just as he turned and spotted me for the perfect snap.

Editing

I did some processing using Lightroom, just trying to bring out the colours a bit on the background, and a bit of vignette as well.

In my camera bag

At the moment i am rebuilding my equipment, so just my 50mm to go on my Canon 5d Mark II, and an old 75-300mm Canon lens from my original Canon Slr which is on its last legs :(

Feedback

Patience...patience...patience....and a bit of luck. Honestly, just always look around and watch for what's happening as people's eyes are often a great way to find something interesting. When approaching, your subject especially if its alive, is just act naturally and just try to become part of the environment. I'm just an enthusiast photographer and just I just try to find unique angles to every day subjects and being 6'5, means lots of kneeling and laying down. :)
