The ultimate wish of a Hindu to die and be cremated along a riverbank, the holier the river, the better for the departed soul, they believe. Those near death wait to die in the buildings behind-close to the cremation area.
Bodies are burned in wood on a flat area close to or on the ghat (a riverbank usually with steps which lead down to the river). Once the cremation is completed, any remaining bone fragments left over are placed into the river along with the ashes.
