I took this photo from Pier 1 at the Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn, NY across the East River from lower Manhattan.Time
This image was taken at 6:04 PM on November 6, 2015. I had been wanting to shoot this view for a long time but had hoped to capture it with some sunset colors in the sky. I didn't realize how long of a walk it would be from the Highline area so I quickly jumped into a cab to the Brooklyn Bridge and then jogged my way across the bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge Park. But by that time, the sun was down and I was left with the city lights. But even without a sunset, I'm still proud of this image. I just hope I can go back and capture it again a bit earlier in the evening!Lighting
I wanted to capture this view at sunset but I was running late from my visit of the Highline on the other side of Manhattan so by the time I got to this spot in Brooklyn, I had to do with the city lights only. Lucky this was NYC and fairly bright since it was early in the evening (about 6pm) and offices were all pretty much lit casting a mix of colors on the East River.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II, with a Canon EF 24-70mm lens f/2.8L. I also used my Manfrotto Befree tripod since this was a 20s exposure at f/8.0, 100 ISO.Inspiration
I had seen similar views before and when I found out that I was going to go to NYC for a few days, I made it a point to get to Brooklyn just to capture this view.Editing
This image was shot in RAW and processed in Adobe Lightroom. Mostly increased vibrance and saturation, that's about it.In my camera bag
It depends where I'm at... If I'm in anytown USA, like in Phoenix, LA or NYC, I will carry my Lowepro Vertex 200 AW backpack with a couple of lenses. Usually my beloved Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L lenses, a Canon 580 EX II flash, my Manfrotto Befree tripod, a portable WD 500GB My Passport portable hard drive and my trusted Apple 15" MacBook Pro. I might leave my laptop in the safe of the hotel room but otherwise feel pretty comfortable carrying my bag. However, if I'm in Paris (like I was this summer), I leave my bag at the hotel and just walk the city with my iPhone 6+. I've seen way too many pickpockets over there this summer and decided not to take any chances carrying pro photography equipment by myself!... I only carried my bag or some of my gear when I was out in the French countryside or if with a group of people/photographers.Feedback
This view of lower Manhattan is actually pretty famous and that spot can get crowded. I was the only photographer when I got there but by the time I left there were 4 others. Like any landscape shot, it's best to do your homework on where to go, how to get there, what time is best and think about the shot you want to take ahead of time so you can plan accordingly and only bring what you need. I know that if I can capture this view again I will want to arrive well before sunset so that I can enjoy the changing colors in the sky. I will try not to schedule too many other shooting locations that same day because that walk across the Brooklyn Bridge is longer than it appeared on the map and then afterward I still had to get back to my hotel in midtown! Also, the East River can be busy and there is boat traffic to consider. At night each boat leaves a streak of light and as a photographer you have to decide whether you want this streak of light going horizontally in your shot or not. If not, you have to wait in between boats hoping that there's enough time for a long exposure in between boats.
