Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a friend's apartment in Philadelphia, PA. My husband and I are self-taught photographers that experiment with lighting, angles, and themes.

Time

This photo was taken late one evening, about 1 am. We waited for night to fall and the kids to fall asleep. Shooting at night allowed us to capture the strongest contrast and shadows.

Lighting

We love to use more unusual lighting. Instead of using typical photography lighting we employ lighting usually found at hardware stores. For this image in particular we used red flood lights sometimes sold around the holidays.

Equipment

For this image we employed a Nikon D3200, with no tripod or flash. Without the tripod we were able to move fluidly around the the female model, capturing more unusual or even at times awkward angles.

Inspiration

This image came out of a fun evening with friends. My husband and I don't always go into a shoot with particular expectations in mind but try to be as open as possible to all outcomes. This was one of the first times that we used the red flood light. It was so much fun and still one of our favorite options for lighting.

Editing

Typically we incorporate extensive post-processing in our development to adjust color and exposure. In this image, minimal post-processing occurred. The red flood lights already provided intriguing color. Some of the other images within this series demonstrate more extensive post-processing. Feel free to check out our page for more examples!

In my camera bag

We rarely carry our full camera bag but instead pack our camera, extra memory cards, extra battery, and the battery's charger in a book bag to always have the bare essentials on hand. Since we love to engage unusual angles and lighting, we typically don't carry a tripod or specific lighting but use what's found on location.

Feedback

Do whatever is necessary to capture the image! My husband and I are all for climbing into any interesting positions to capture a new perspective. Go a little too high! Drop a little too low! The only way to expand the field is to test the boundaries.
