So this previous winter I got an idea, why not go outside... At first that became my garden.Time
I had been inside all day with my pc. Suddenly I saw orange colors being cast through the windows. That meant the golden hour had started. So an hour before the sun set.Lighting
When I look a the picture now, I can see a few things about the light, to get the look I got. Since the overall feel of the picture is orange/warm, to make it the "easiest", it's important to choose the right time of the day, to shoot pictures, namely about one hour before the sun rises or it sets - the golden hour. You can kind of get the same look in Photoshop, but that won't be the same.Equipment
This was shot on my "old" Nikon D5300, combined with a Nikkor 85mm f.1/8 for awesome bokeh.Inspiration
Many times when I go out with my camera, I don't go for a particular motive, I just go out to see what the day brings. That day it all went perfectly together. The light, my cat was there, it was cold so the air was clear, and my brother was there to help me. Afterwards when I looked at what I had got, I got really exited. That's the thing, when I succeed on one thing, it makes me go out to do it again.Editing
The last few years, I have been shooting RAW, after discovering all the benefits over JPEG's. That means, I edit everything I take with my camera. I use mainly Lightroom and Photoshop for my edits. Sometimes there's almost nothing to edit, other times I can use a hour to make a picture perfect in my eyes. This picture is only corrected a little. Some sharpness, a little color correction to make it more warm. That's it!In my camera bag
What I normally have in my bag, depends on where i'm heading. If i'm just going for a walk a Saturday afternoon, I kind of imagine what I want pictures of. I don't want to carry a lot, so almost every time I choose only one lens to carry, that could be the Nikkor 105mm f.2/8 because of its awesome macro capabilities, or a 85mm f.1/8 because of its amazing bokeh, combined with my new Nikon D500. If i'm going to another country, I simply take my whole back with me, because I never know what i'm going to take pictures of. If one would look inside my back now, you would find lenses ranging from 14 to 200mm at f.2/8 or below, everything Nikon, a sturdy tripod for night pictures, everything where a long shutter-speed is needed. You won't find any flash, because I have always liked to work with natural light.Feedback
If you wan't to work with animals, it's very important to have patience. They are simply animals, and especially cats, they do what they want. Also you should already prepare your mind, that you might not get anything. Another thing is to have a helper, it makes things 100 times easier. This time I had my brother helping me with the cat. He was running around with a small stick, which the cat ran after, while I was laying down to shoot pictures. I would not have gotten the same shot, without a helping hand. And also choose the right time of the day, so you get the right light to work with.
