Behind The Lens

Location

I made this one on a portable greenscreen at a cyberpunk fandom convention in Delaware.

Time

Around noon, in a parking garage.

Lighting

I shot with the postproduction in mind, so each light was gelled for the hue of the spill light from the planned light sources in the final composite. It's subtle, but these things matter.

Equipment

This series was made with a Canon 5dMk3 and three Paul Buff Einstein E640 lights.

Inspiration

Art direction on this series was done by the Living Multiverse team, to illustrate a series of vignettes from their cyberpunk setting.

Editing

Postproduction is why clients like LMV choose me. They share their vision, and I bring that world to life. Fun sidenote: The weapon's fire in this composite is a manipulation of a public domain nebula image shot by NASA with the Hubble telescope.

In my camera bag

I pick my gear based on the needs of every shoot, but just about everything I shot in this series was made on Canon's 24-70 F/2.8L which is an excellent workhorse for making clean straightforward undistorted images for compositing work.

Feedback

Plan your composite in advance. Shoot with the light sources and special FX already in mind, so you can choose colors for your gels that would natively be shed by those "imaginary sources" that haven't been added to the image yet.
