Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the end of a beach in Prince Edward Island, Canada in July.

Time

It was taken at about 4 in the afternoon.

Lighting

It was overcast and cloudy, but that gave the photo a HDR/mysterious feel to it, which I love.

Equipment

The only piece of equipment I used was a regular kit lens (18-55mm) at 18mm on a digital Canon RebelXS. No tripod, no flash, no diffuser, and no filter.

Inspiration

I always try and find ways to capture a shot that make people see things in a different way. When I saw this broken pier, I was trying to capture the mysterious and abandoned feeling that the pier presents.

Editing

The only editing I did to this photo was play with the amount of contrast and highlights in the photo. I did this using Picassa 3.

In my camera bag

I always like to have my kit lens because it is very underrated. The true measure of a good photographer is the ability to take great pictures with the minimum amount of equipment. Sure if you have the top of the line equipment that is awesome, but it is not necessary to take amazing photos. A staple in my camera bag is my 50mm lens. I love using it to capture different depths of fields. I always try to prepare for my shoots as well, so if I know I will need something like my tripod or shutter release I pack those as well.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to shoot in "bad" weather. You can get some amazing photos if you get down, try a new angle, and press the shutter, even in "unshootable conditions". Look for different perspectives, something that makes you think about your picture. Think creatively, and have fun.
