Location
I took this photo at Milne Conservation Park located in Markham Ontario. This was a short path hidden between thick shrubbery, you could see the exit from either side, so I took the opportunity for a rather interesting shot.Time
I think it was around the middle of the day, it was very cold.Lighting
The original unedited photo was pretty well lit, I was standing on the outside of the awning of shrubs, so the sun was above me, there were streams of light coming from above. Underneath the shrubbery you had a dark shadow and then light coming out from the other side in the distance.Equipment
I used a Nikon D3100, my first DSLR Kit camera that was given to me back in 2010. Did not use a flash or a tripod.Inspiration
It reminded me of the movie The Secret Garden 1993. I knew what would become of the photo, I was going for an eerie, sort of dream like scene similar to the movie.Editing
I certainly did, I took the photo into photoshop and put it through most of the adjustment sections, brightness-contrast, levels, curves, exposure, vibrance and photo filter. I used some of the darkroom techniques in photoshop (dodge and burn), where there was light I used paint brush techniques to bring out more of a haze, some desaturation. I wanted the photo to seem as though it had more grain so I added some noise, to imply it was taken with an older camera. I manually created a vignette and increased areas of shadow. In my camera bag
To this day I normally have the Nikon D3100, I replaced the Kit lens with a SIGMA ART Lens and a 70-300 telephoto lens. I also carry an old Canon Rebel X (digital/film) camera for black and white photography.Feedback
A park is a perfect place to find instances in time that otherwise wouldn't be found just walking on the street. It was freezing on that day, yet I spent probably an hour taking photos. I didn't let my discomfort stunt my ability to continue walking around the area, I looked for places where the time of day and the weather would make all the difference in the scene.
