While hiking through Letchworth State Park in NY state last March 8th, suddenly looking to my left where this trough runs through, the shadows and light made for an incredibly amazing scene. Quickly I snapped off a bunch of shots, with the B&W looking the best.

Location
This photo was taken on the East side of Letchworth State Park in Wyoming County NY.Time
My partner and I arrived at the park probably around 8 amLighting
Late winter mid to late morning sunlightEquipment
While normally I would have been using a tripod, I decided that there was enough natural light to negate the need for my tripod. I was using my Canon 7d on this day with my Canon 24-105L lens for all purpose shooting, with no filters or flash used.Inspiration
While on the return hike towards our vehicle, we came to the trough you see in the photo and both got excited when we spotted the way the shadows from trees contrasted against the sunlight and began making compositions. Finally, we left this spot and finished our hike.Editing
In Photoshop Elements 11 I did basic edits to exposure, contrast, and brightness, and converted it to B&W.In my camera bag
My lens selection normally is a Canon 10-22mm for wide angle, the 24-105 for all purpose, and a Sigma 18-250 to give a different look to a landscape or for close up work.Feedback
If you want to get similar shots to this, earlier in the year with snow on the ground work best due to the lower angle of the sun. I've tried the same location without snow and it just doesn't have the same impact. Finally, keep your eyes open. I still look for similar situations during the winter anywhere I might be shooting.
