Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot in Levanto, Cinque Terre, Italy in 2015, while touring around Europe.

Time

This shot was taken just before sunset on September the 21st 2015. My family and I had been swimming at the beach all afternoon. When it was almost sunset, I realised that it was going to be a spectacular sunset. So I ran back to our campervan, in my jandals, to grab my camera. By the time I got back to the beach the sun was golden and I got heaps of magical shots.

Lighting

I love the lighting in this shot! I think that it makes the silhouette of the fisherman really stand out. I am particularly surprised that my lens didn't flare up, because it was just a kit lens.

Equipment

I used my Canon 40D that my Uncle had kindly given me just a couple of weeks before, with a 18-55mm lens at f3.5.

Inspiration

Before I took this shot, I had seen a few people down on the rocks fishing, and I decided that I wanted to get a shot of them with the gorgeous sun in the background. So I walked to the other end of the beach from where I was and I got the shot. Along the way I got heaps of other photos, but when I saw this photo later that night, I knew that it was one of the best photos I had ever taken.

Editing

This shot didn't require much post-processing because all the lighting and colour that I wanted was there. I did however, remove a plane from the shot that was leaving a jet stream, and distracting the eye from the people fishing. I also boosted the saturation of the shot, just a bit though because I wanted the sky to really pop out.

In my camera bag

In my bag you'll find my main camera, a Canon 40D. Which even though is an old camera, with only 10 megapixels, still produces stunning shots! I normally have my Canon 50mm 1.8 lens on my camera because it is such a cool lens that produces amazing results and allows me to be more creative with my shots. In my bag I also have my Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 II that I use for landscape shots because it is the widest of my lenses. I also have a Canon 90-300mm f4.5-5.6 zoom lens that I use for all my action shots. In my bag you'll also find some manual focus extension tubes, that I don't use anywhere near as much as I would like to! I also have a new Canon IXUS, digital point and shoot, that I use when my main camera goes flat, or when I'm somewhere that it's better to use this small camera, rather than a big camera. I have a Triopo TR-586EX flash gun in my bag, that I absolutely love!!! The flash gun has enabled me to do so much more with photography. I would highly recommend getting one! In my bag I also have a GoPro Hero Plus, that is awesome for action videos. However, I use the GoPro more for time lapses rather than anything else. I always have my Velbon CX 540 tripod strapped to my bag, that I couldn't live without! Lastly you'll find a power bank, to charge my phone or the GoPro, a lens cleaning kit and a set of ND filters.

Feedback

I love photography because it challenges me to be more creative and think outside the box. I want my pictures to stand out from others. I want to produce photos that will make people stop scrolling and inspire them. When it comes to photography, you really need to take heaps of photos and go the extra mile to get the golden shot. The only way to capture better photos is to keep taking new photos and trying new things. While you're out taking photos, don't settle for the first shot, take more photos and challenge yourself each time to take a better photo than the last one.
