Arrived on location about half an hour before sunrise to setup. I used an ND filter to create some movement in the clouds, but there was hardly any wind. However, I'm happy that some of the shots turned out quite well with the sun just creeping over the clouds to get this starburst effect.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Kokol Hill, about 30 minutes away from Kota Kinabalu city centre.

Time

This was taken quite early in the day. Sunrise is just before six in Sabah, Malaysia, so in order to get this shot, I had all my equipment set up at least half an hour before and started shooting just as the sky started to lighten up.

Lighting

There's nothing much to share about lighting except to wait for the sun to peek just above the clouds to get that sunburst.

Equipment

I used a Pentax K5,a tripod, and an ND filter. I wanted to create some movement in the clouds but it was a pretty still day.

Inspiration

I've been to this particular spot numerous times over the years and each time, the result is different. The mountain on the left is Sabah's pride called Mount Kinabalu. It's a majestic mountain and can often be found as the centrepiece in many photos of Sabah.

Editing

Post-processing was done. Some burning was done and I also made the colours warmer to match what I remember the morning to be. I also cropped the image at the bottom to give it a slightly panaroma-ish feel to help capture the sweeping vista that was before me when I took the shot.

In my camera bag

It really depends on what I plan to shoot, but the usual suspects would be my Sigma 10-20 f/3.5, Sigma 50 f/1.4, and on some occasions, the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. Of course, spare batteries and memory cards would also be tucked in somewhere in the bag. I only ever bring speedlights when I know I would use them.

Feedback

I think having the necessary information about a certain place increases your likelihood of getting a keeper. I knew what time sunrise would be so I made sure I got to the place with enough time to set up, compose and take test shots. Pre-visualising what it is you'd like to capture, really, having a picture of the shot in your head, helps you think through what you need to do in order to get that picture in your head. In this case, I wanted a sunburst and some movement in the clouds, so I got my ND filter installed, and a narrow aperture dialed in.
