Location
We were on Easter Island, just a five minute walk from the tiny, solitary town.Time
This was at the start of the evening. The sun was going down and a storm was rolling in but we had just arrived and were eager to get out and see the famous statues that brought us to the island.Lighting
This was an unintentional sunset shot. I was trying to capture the drama of the huge statue with the storm rolling in when all of the sudden the sun started to peek through in the distance.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor 18-105 lens on a Joby gorilla pod.Inspiration
Easter Island has always been on my bucket list, so this shot has been a long time in the making. I was looking to get a picture that incorporated the history of this amazing place along with something that evoked the feelings of mystery shrouding the island. I loved how dramatic the juxtaposition of an oncoming storm was next to these huge immovable statues.Editing
The original shot was a little dark, so I brought up the exposure and shadows. I adjusted the clarity and contrast to add to the dramatic feel and took out some of the noise. In my camera bag
When I travel I am usually away from home for a month or two at a time. This means I have extremely limited space and weight available for gear. I also know the risk of damage or theft is high, so I try not to take anything that would be devastating to lose. My travel go-tos are a Nikon D7000, a Nikkor 18-105, a Tokina 11-16 F2.8 a few polarizing filters and a Joby gorilla pod (my absolute favorite travel accessory). If I have space and know there will be an abundance of wildlife where I am going then I pack a Tamaron 70-200 F2.8 and a Nikkor 50 F1.8.Feedback
When shooting a specific landmark or monument, make sure you incorporate the background as part of the shot. It makes it much more interesting and comes off as a complete composition instead of just looking like a memory snapshot. This could mean shooting in a certain season when there is snow or blooming flowers around or waiting for a colorful time of day.
