Location
This photo was taken in Marseille, southern France, at the Old-Port( Vieux Port de Marseille)Time
The sunset in Marseille is magical, the old port, the sea, the sky. With this particular shot i was lucky to catch the clouds at the dawn, just a bit after the sunset.Lighting
The clouds were beautifully lit, i wanted to highlight this but also to keep the rowers lit. I wanted to emphasize the breaking of the light by the clouds and thus i added a bit of vignette in post processing.Equipment
This was shot with Samsung NX300 + 20-50 f/3.5 lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
The sunset next to the sea has something magical about it. The rowers usually come back at the sunset, i wanted to capture that moment, the sky that was on fire, the rowers going back and a glimpse of the sun hidden behind the buildings.Editing
In post processing I saved a bit more of the highlights to enhance the sky, raised the shadows to show the city and the rowers, enhanced the image with a bit of clarity and added some vignetting to emphasize the sky and the rowers. In my camera bag
I usually need 3 lenses, a prime lens for low light & portraiture, a zoom for travel photography and wide angle for the architecture or close action subjects. I use a mirrorless system so those 3 lenses can be very small, now my favorite kit consists of Sony A6000 + Sony 16mm and Fisheye adapter + Sony 50mm OSS and Sony 16-50 pancake. A really small package that can be ready for a lot of scenarios.Feedback
Marseille is a beautiful city and the sunset is very accessible, follow the golden hour and wait for the sunset at the old port. Wait for the perfect light and take the shot! There are alos other magical places in Marseille such as Vallon des Auffes, Anse de Malmousque, Notre Dame de la Garde that offer incredible sceneries.
