Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken in the basement of my old school - Viborg Media College.

Time

Since this was a school projekt, I obviously waited till the last second possible. Therefore it was taken late at night before i had to hand it in the next morning.

Lighting

I wanted to go for a kind of theater scene look with the lighting, so I used a fresnel ligt as a spot up high, a softbox as secondary lighting, and ofcourse a spot with red gel on the background.

Equipment

A Hasselblad H3DII-39MS with a 120mm, 3 lamps, a deck of cards, a stair and a friend to press the button was used for the shot. Most people have that stuff lying around, right?

Inspiration

I was inspired by my great grandfather who was a professional illusionist, and have inspired the whole family to pursue creative traits. Furthermore it is my way of portraying that I'm a person who tend to keep the real emotions on the inside and strive to entertain all the time. The show must go on you know.

Editing

As for post processing, there was some work to be done. It's actually incredibly hard to throw a deck of cards in random good looking spread from a ladder timed with taking a shot at the right moment. Especially with a huge and slow medium format camera. Every single card on the picture was handpicked from a large amount of shots and masked in on the original picture. The time it took to pick up all the cards that many times was painfull.. If someone where to look closely, one card can actually be seen in two places. It's just magic.. Simple...

In my camera bag

I like using my old Voigtländer the most. It might be more expensive per picture, but it doesn't have the same limits as a digital d-slr in my opinion. Besides that i would use my old trusted d300s with a cheap 50mm 1.4. It gets the job done.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is to try different things, and have a ton on photos before you go editing. I regret not using a longer flash time to get motion in the cards, and not having more light on my hat.. And when taking a self portrait ALLWAYS have someone pressing the button. Don't waste time with timers and stuff. It's really not cheating having a friend press the button..
