Location
This image was shot in the green space in my neighborhood in Florida. We are still new to the area and I'm always on the look out for new spaces that would lend themselves to a photo shoot.Time
I really love this image and I love the time of day in which we shot it. I took this in January and there's something about the setting sun in Florida in January. Although it gives off a warm glow, there's a coolness to it as well. I took this shot at 4:30 pm.Lighting
I was really aiming to create a coolness in this shot so I angled my subject away from the sun, while still making sure she was well lit. The sun was just sinking below the treeline, so I was able to put her in the shade of the trees to create the cool effect.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Canon 7D and a Canon 85mm 1.8 prime lens.Inspiration
We live in Florida and winters, though not lush and green are still green (and sometimes brown). January in Florida is anything but a winter wonderland. However, I very much wanted to create a wintry scene, inspired by Little Red Riding Hood's journey into the woods to Grandmother's house, most especially with this subject because of her steely blue eyes.Editing
Yes. As you might imagine, it doesn't snow a lot in Florida. However, I've been lucky enough to live in some beautiful locations where it does snow a lot. While I decreased the temperature of this image a little bit to make it a hint cooler, the majority of my post processing involved a custom brush that I created in Photoshop to create the effect of softly falling snow.In my camera bag
First and foremost, I have my Canon body, my 7D. After that, I have my Canon 50mm 1.4 prime lens, my Canon 85mm 1.8 prime lens and my Lensbaby Sweet 35 Composer Pro. To help feed my creative soul, I also usually have my copper pipe and some version of a prism, just in case the light catches my eye and my creativity starts buzzing.Feedback
Creativity is key. When you're creating snow in a warm environment, it really helps to have the image already formed in your mind's eye and then let the scene unfold from there. When taking this particular shot, I already knew what I wanted it to look like once the editing process was completed. Just because you don't live in a winter wonderland doesn't mean you can't create ethereal, wintry images!
