This was taken in Million Dollar Highway on the way from Ouray to Silverton. I wanted to show the S curve on this scenic highway with light trails and at the same time show the fall colors and sunset. Clouds wasn't as magical as I would have hoped. This place is also called Switzerland of US.
I shot the sunset first and then wait for the lights to go down a bit and started shooting car trails, right side didn't get it perfectly as it was a merge from 3 cars. Anyway didn't feel like standing there alone in the cold dark night as I was greeted by a fox while shooting this scene. This is my first trial shot in the art of blending over time. Hope you enjoy!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Ouray, CO on the famous road Million Dollar Highway.

Time

The photo was taken at sunset and another hour going into sunset for the light trails during fall season

Lighting

The sunset I was hoping for did not happen so I went with having to improvise and add light trails to the scene. Since the sun was setting behind these mountains the foreground were dark and I had to do some shadow recovery, then some more work on merging the light trails captured almost an hour into sunset

Equipment

DSLR Nikon D750, Nikon 24mm f1.4 lens, Tripod and wired trigger

Inspiration

I have been scouting all day along this road with some fall foliage and finally ended up here so the road nicely curves and you are at dead center of things.

Editing

Yes common adjustments with some shadow recovery and color correction. Then took main image and several light trail images into PS and started doing blending with blend mode lighten to pass through light trails and started doing manual masking to show only the trails.

In my camera bag

Camera, lenses, circular filters, square GND filter 100mm, lens cleaning cloth (lot of em), Nodal slide, Mult row pano setups and tripod.

Feedback

Go with your vision and what you want to achieve as final image, pre-process in your head and capture the right frames to get the right post processing done for the results. Nothing wrong in what others have done in a location but be unique in your approach. May the light be with you all!
