Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture of Julie Saint-André at her home, in Vence (France), during a shooting with nothing planned.

Time

It was in the middle of a sunny morning, after sharing a coffee.

Lighting

I had to shoot only my model, not including disturbing elements in the composition. The best place was the window, against a very bright light, that I used to eliminate any detail in the background, create the halo around Julie, and naturally light the smoke, even on the legs.

Equipment

Nikon D700, 85 mm at full aperture f/1.4, 1/320s, exposure +1 IL, ISO 200, natural light only.

Inspiration

Julie is an artist, a performer, but not used to be a static model, moreover for quite sensual pictures. She wanted to have some pictures she didn't have. I'm not familiar with that kind of pictures neither, sowe made these images in a climate of friendship, respect and trust so visible in her eyes.

Editing

Took the picture in raw, then process it on camera raw for soft black and white render. Then on Photshop, I used retrographer to add a light sepia rendering with tonal film effect. That's all.

In my camera bag

I like full frame DSLR, so I curently have a D700, waiting for some Df2 ... I also like working with wide apertures and old lenses, so I often have the 85 f/1.4, Noct-58 f/1.2, and Angenieux 28-70 f/2.6 with me. For concerts, dance, shows, I prefer the Angenieux 180 f/2.3. When I don't know the conditions, I take the modern and versatile 28-300 mm. Thanks to Nikon's unchanged mount, I can use all that lenses.

Feedback

Trust between model and photographer is the most important thing. If you are frinds, it's even better. Don't start to shoot before quietly talking about the pictures sharing a tea or a coffee. Let your model participate, improvise, don't be directive, take care of the expression in the eyes.
