Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Croatia. I often travel on my own, which as a photographer is perfect as you are more likely to spot the intricate details of the place you visit. One thing I noticed in Croatian towns and villages was the number of cushions and teacups around - Croatians can are easily spotted around the country, sipping tea or coffee, watching the world go by no matter how busy their work day might be.

Time

It was mid-afternoon. This photo has a beautiful warm tone to it, as the sunshine reflects beautifully on the stonework, giving this tone as long as the sun is up.

Lighting

This is natural light, which I think complements the scene beautifully - there is a certain European feel to this photo and I think it is the warm lighting that makes it like this.

Equipment

Canon 550d, 18-135mm lens.

Inspiration

I love roaming around and doing street photography. Often I find that it is the innate objects that can tell a story better - in many respects, this photo does not require people to tell someone what is going on.

Editing

I did not go any post-processing. This was shot in JPEG, and I felt that the picture was shot in a perfect exposure.

In my camera bag

Since taking this photo I built on my photography skills. I now own a Canon 6d, and my main lenses are 24-70mm, 50mm and 85mm. I don't tend to ever use flash - I shoot in manual and so try to expose as best as I can using the natural light. When I travel, I find it too much hassle to carry a tripod, but this forces me to be more creative when light is now and I need more stability. Often it is as simple as finding a wall to balance my camera on.

Feedback

I never artificially set up an image when I travel - this was exactly as I found it. Try to be as authentic as you can. Also, consider the angle - I have found over the years, some of my best shots are taken when I am kneeling down or placing my camera on the floor. If you can travel on your own, it will also allow you to really focus on the world around you are spot little things like this.
