Great composition and wonderful use of lighting.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my old studio, basically a sort of underground bunker where I've learnt everything I know about studio photography in difficult situations! Funny thing : I started shooting mainly portraits because I had a very low ceiling, so I could hardly afford having people standing..!

Time

It was night, I often used to shoot at that time so my mind was free!

Lighting

I always shoot highly contrasted portraits : this makes the image dramatic and intense. In other words, real.

Equipment

I used my good old Nikon D90 with the 18-105 kit lens (yep, there's actually people shooting with that!) and a single led panel with an octabox.

Inspiration

Lucilla's powerful and unconventional beauty: her traits can be cheerful, but she looks best when they are craved in a deep, suffering pose. The lighting is inspired by the most ambitious Caravaggio paintings, and Lucilla looks just like a Madonna.

Editing

I focused very much on her skin, I played with reds and oranges balance to show flaws that are not visible at the human eye. Her skin gets also exposed, as she is in her deep, intense expression.

In my camera bag

Nikon D90, Nikon D700, Nikkor 18-105, 50mm

Feedback

Focus on mood, stay simple and most of all, get in touch with your model at your best!
