I took this on my old property near Westby, Wisconsin in January of 2009. It was sunset late after noon with the sun going down over the Mississippi River.Time
It was around 5 in the afternoon in January.Lighting
Some of the most beautiful lighting in winter is at sunset or sunrise. There is always a point if you wait where the sun is just in the right position and it puts the sky into a rainbow light show.Equipment
I took this with my old film camera Minolta A2000 35mm ASA 200 film. I had it actually on the automatic setting. I used no flash or tripod. I also had my 75 - 200 mm lens on the camera.Inspiration
In winter my favorite time of day is dawn or sunset. The sun colors the sky and clouds.Editing
I did use Topaz HDR on this picture from their Topaz Suite. Some people don't like the use of HDR but in some pictures as this I want it to be a piece of art to be enjoyed and I'm not concerned with the natural photo state. In my camera bag
To day I have two Pelican Cases. I have a Canon DSLR with two telephoto lens, My second case has 2 Nikon DLSR bodies with lenes up to 600 mm. Flashes, tripods, and a third aluminum case with video equipment, lighting, microphones, etc.Feedback
Patience and timing. The sun moves very quick at this time of day and you have to be ready to shoot the picture. Many times you have only seconds and if you see the beautiful shot take it and don't think about it or it will be gone. And for what ever you do don't ever think about the money shot. If you think about it you have already lost it.
