Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Tx.

Time

This was mid-afternoon on a day with scattered showers.

Lighting

This was mid afternoon on a hot day with scattered showers in central Texas. The lighting was nuts.

Equipment

I was just starting out with my first DSLR, a Nikon 3100, handheld, no flash. It was maybe my first or second time using the camera, and I think I actually took this one with the AUTO setting because the light was so whacky. I may have just gotten a circular polarizer, too, and was trying to figure that all out.

Inspiration

I was attracted to the high contrast between the red and green. I like taking pictures of bugs (insects, Arthropods, arachnids, whatever). They lead such tiny, fascinating lives.

Editing

I was still a beginner, so I just kinda tinkered with this one til I liked the way it looked in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I’m shooting a Nikon D7200 now. I’ve usually got a tripod, and a macro and telephoto lens, but I try not to get bogged down by too much gear. I like shooting what catches my fancy, and wildlife move fast.

Feedback

Just start shooting. I never thought one of my first shots as a beginner would continue to hold up as one of my best. Don’t be afraid of the auto setting in a pinch. I know that’s blasphemy, but I’m doing this for me and for fun. I’d rather have the picture than the prestige.
