Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture at the Bronx Zoo in New York. I was actually able to get pretty close to this flaming and used my telephoto lens to take this shot. I’m self taught, so it probably wasn’t my first shot.

Time

It was a rainy and cool day. It was an hour or so around noon I believe. Not the greatest conditions. It had stopped raining momentarily while we were by the flamingos. I think they were the first animals we stopped by. I’ve always loved the majestic birds and their color. This one let me get pretty close, but did keep an eye on me.

Lighting

It was overcast and raining off and on all day. Good for saturated colors, so it was great for the flamingo.

Equipment

I shot hand held with my Canon T2i and my telephoto 55-250 lens.

Inspiration

I prefer to take pictures of animals. I like close up and macro best. Of course, in a zoo you can only get so close to an animal. I prefer to take wildlife in their natural environment, but that’s not always possible. It’s also fantastic if you can get a colorful animal and/or one that’s expressive.

Editing

I always take in .RAW format, so there is always a bit of post-processing. I probably lightened it a bit as it was an overcast day. I may have bumped up the color a bit.

In my camera bag

My Canon T2i, my macro and telephoto lens.

Feedback

Be patient and spend as much time as needed to get the shot you want. We were on a bus trip, so time was limited. I still spent quite a bit of time with the flamingos.
