Location
"First Snowfall" was taken near Victoria, Minnesota, at the Lowry Nature Center, a lovely reserve of woods, lakes, and trails.Time
It was late afternoon when I noticed this plant. Because I was very cold from trudging through snow-covered trails, I took just a few hurried shots and headed for the warmth of home.Lighting
The plant was in shadow and I liked the mood--a sense of isolation and stillness.Equipment
This shot was captured with my simple Kodak EasyShare C 613 zoom digital camera.Inspiration
Earlier in the day I had read a lovely piece by Raymond A. Foss: "Snow flurries come on small singular spirals, falling through the air spun by their shapes, the tug of the wind. Later in the season when fall yields to winter, soon enough they will come, in legions" Many of my photographs have been inspired by various quotations.Editing
To the raw photo I added two other images--a photo of soap bubbles for a little sparkle and a photo of crackle finish to help create a nostalgic look. To soften the image, I added a subtle frost border. In my camera bag
I carry nothing but my trusty little Kodak EasyShare. I readily admit to being technologically challenged, so I need a camera I can just point and shoot!Feedback
I almost always manipulate my photographs; I love the thrill of transformation. To that end, I've created an assortment of what I consider interesting backgrounds--different types of finishes, textures, patterns, colors--to use in layering. My advise is to create a collection of potential layering images--rippled water, intense clouds, leaves, weathered siding, fences, filigree, bubbles, stone, fossils, the possibilities are endless--to transform raw photos into your own vision of the world.
